Tummy Time is a Position to Play

A PART OF A BABY’S PLAY DIET

Even very young baby’s play in various positions. Sometimes they play on their back, on their side and sometimes on their tummy.

Typically a 3 month old baby should be engaging in around 60-90 minutes of Tummy Time every day. This may seem a lot and it can also raise a lot of questions such as Why and How?

Why is Tummy Time Beneficial?

Tummy Time is a safe position which babies should be encouraged to do from birth to allow them to build muscles, develop their vestibular system and increase bodily awareness to allow them to roll, sit, crawl, stand and walk

Tummy Time is a position for play and gives your baby time to explore the world and themselves through movement and learn through interaction and play.

Tummy Time allows you to build trust, connect and bond with your baby.

How can you support your baby?

One way is to vary the positions you try. Tummy time does not need to be on the floor and especially for younger babies I would recommend using nurturing positions and holds.

Introduce Sensory Play to connect, be playful and distract.

Be aware of how much Tummy Time to do at once and consider how to incorporate it into your daily routine.
